With a unique “Y” shape, different from the other Finger Lakes, Keuka Lake is roughly twenty-two miles long and at its narrowest is half-a-mile wide, and at its widest is two miles across. The lake's maximum depth is nearly one hundred and ninety feet, but its average depth is just over one hundred feet. The earliest settlers wanted to name the lake Crooked Lake but it officially became Keuka Lake in 1887. For years it was used to transport goods and produce like the Hammondsport grain that traveled through the canal system to Baltimore and Philadelphia. Moreover, there were many ice houses in the area to harvest ice blocks in the winter which were used for cooling steamboats. Like Cayuga and Seneca, the area surrounding Keuka Lake is also fantastic for growing grapes and the first vineyard was planted here in 1836. This was the beginning of the region’s winemaking and there were two hundred acres dedicated to vineyards by 1860.

People began building lakeshore cottages in the 1870s and since then, Keuka Lake real estate has been quite desirable. The lake is unique, not only in its shape but also because it is the country’s only lake to flow both north and south. Further contributing to its appeal, Keuka is relatively shallow, and therefore one of the warmer lakes in the Finger Lakes region, making it perfect for boating and swimming. Keuka is also a great place to fish as it is full of baitfish and home to natural trout spawning grounds. On the east branch’s shores is Keuka College and on the west branch, you’ll find Keuka Lake State Park. There are also a variety of lakefront restaurants along its shores, but most of the lakefront is dedicated to Keuka Lake real estate.
