Macedon’s settlement and growth were greatly impacted by the Erie Canal. The canal’s two ports were the village of Macedon and Wayneport, then known as West Macedon. Today Macedon is home to roughly ten thousand residents and part of the master-planned community of Gananda.

The Palmyra-Macedon Central School District serves an area over forty-eight square miles with schools in both communities.
